The Department has a rich collection in its libraries spread across the State. The two Central Libraries namely SRS Central Library and SPS Central Library have a collection of sixty thousand and forty thousand titles on varied subjects, respectively.
The Oriental Research Library, M . A Road, Srinagar has a collection of about twenty-nine thousand and the City Central Library,
M . A Road, Srinagar, initially created by transferring a major part of the SPS Central Library, has a collection of about thirty thousand titles.
Generally, a District Library has a collection ranging from 10,000 to 25,000. However, some libraries have a smaller number of books ranging from 6000 to 7500.
A Tehsil Library has a collection of 3500 to 6000 books while Border Block Library possesses a humble collection of about 2000 titles.
In view of the increased demand from the student community, the Department added special corners to public libraries on competitive examinations like IAS and KAS during 2010. In the first instant about 100 titles each were provided to Central, District and Tehsil libraries.
Orders for providing these titles to public libraries at the lowest level in blocks and border blocks have been issued and funds allotted for making the purchase.
